Decker's parents relocated to Louisiana at the beginning of 1990s. Decker won a regional talent contest with her version that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart in the year she was only nine. Decker relocated to Georgia around the age of 15. She had begun writing songs and made regular trips to Nashville and making rounds of record companies as well as music publishers, looking for a deal. Her songs were being offered to record labels and other artists through a Big Yellow Dog Records agent at the age of 17. Decker was just 17 when she snagged the attention of a representative from Big Yellow Dog Records who began shopping her songs to labels and artists. Jessie James released her debut album in August of 2009. It was a self-titled project. Jessie James was reasonably successful and featured Wanted the single which climbed in the Top 40 of the singles charts. Decker was always viewed as a country singer however, the album's promotion and production was geared towards an audience that was more popular. Her music came under increased scrutinization following the release of two singles. The second single, Boys in the Summer featured a rural feel. The second album of Decker's was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, and three of her country tracks failed. She was then released.
